OASIS invites you to
"GATHERING STARDUST",
a lecture by Darren Baird of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory
3:00 PM Saturday, 21 January 2006
Long Beach Public Library
101 Pacific Avenue
Long Beach, CA
ADMISSION FREE
Two years ago, NASA’s Stardust spacecraft captured dust from Comet
Wild-2. These particles, frozen for billions of years, carry clues to
our solar system’s birth. On January 15th, Stardust returned with its
scientific treasure.
Darren Baird, of Stardust’s Navigation Team, will present the latest
news from the mission and explain the challenges of sending a spacecraft
through a comet’s coma and bringing samples back to Earth. Mr. Baird has
also served on spacecraft navigation teams for Genesis, Mars Global
Surveyor, Mars Odyssey, and Mars Exploration Rover. He is currently a
graduate student in UCLA’s Department of Earth & Space Sciences.
