According to a notice in The Sun, this Friday, 7:30 PM, at
Beckman Hall at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, the Pomona Valley
Amateur Astronomers will host a talk by Marc Rayman, the Deep Space 1
project manager. The talk is open to the public.

Deep Space 1 was a JPL project to test advanced, high-risk
technologies, most notable solar electric ion propulsion. It was
launched in October 1998. In an extended mission, it took photos
of Comet Borrely. It was retired in Dec 2001.

I visited the Pomona Valley Amateur Astronomers Web site
to verify the announcement in The Sub.

According to the PVAA calendar, this Friday's talk is indeed
scheduled to be at Beckman Hall at Harvey Mudd, but the scheduled speaker
is Dr. Marc D Rayman, who will talk about the DAWN mission.

DAWN is an asteroid exploration mission. 1 Ceres and 4 Vesta
are its two targets. DAWN contains various instruments (7-color
camera, mapping spectrometer, gamma ray and neutron spectrometer) to
investigate the composition and structure of these objects.

Both talks sound interesting. I wonder which one will be
presented this Friday? I called the PVAA hotline, +1-909-596-7274.
It annnounced the DAWN talk, but seemed less current than the date on
the announcement in The Sun. The PVAA Hotline recommends calling Bob
Branch, +1-909-982-8015, if there are any questions about the PVAA
events. I tried calling but haven't reached Mr. Branch yet.
Are any OASIS members interested in attending the PVAA talk,
whichever it turns out to be?
