"Reimagining the Sky"
OASIS to hold a student art contest

When is the last time you went outside and looked up at the sky, simply to look at the stars? Do you know the names of the constellations you see? Are those names from ancient mythology meaningful to you?

OASIS is holding a student art contest for elementary school children, entitled "Reimagining the Sky". Entrants will be asked to go outside, gaze at the night sky, and invent their own constellations.

We are pleased to announce that three prominent artists have agreed to help us judge the entries. All of them are well known for their space art. Aldo Spadoni’s work should be especially familiar to OASIS members—Aldo did the illustration You Call This Work? for the poster we distribute at various events. The black and white version can be seen at http://www.oasis-nss.org/gallery.html. He is president of Aerospace Imagineering , a consulting firm specializing in advanced technology conceptual design and visualization for the aerospace, publishing, television, and motion picture industries. Chris Butler is currently a staff artist at Griffith Observatory and lists previous stints as director of a children’s science museum, and financial analyst on the Space Shuttle program at Rockwell International among his many jobs. Check out his work at http://www.sciencecenter.net/butlerart/. Don Dixon is the art director at Griffifth, designing graphics for planetarium shows and publications. His work is on display at http://www.cosmographica.com/.

The contest forms will be distributed to schools in the South Bay and neighboring areas. Entries will be judged for originality of concept and quality of execution. There will be two levels, one for kindergarteners through second graders, and one for third to fifth graders. A total of four prizes will be awarded, including a year's membership in OASIS for the schools and families of the winners.

Entries must be accompanied by official forms which will be distributed in December 2003.
