Thank You For Getting Us
Where We Are

Most people know what Neil Armstrong said on July 20, 1969, but fewer people remember what was said during a live television broadcast on July 23, the day before their splashdown. The three Apollo 11 astronauts took time to thank all the people who had been instrumental in the success of the mission. Collins said, All this was possible only through the blood, sweat, and tears of a number of people. First, the American workmen who put these pieces of machinery together in the factory. Second, the painstaking work done by various test teams during the assembly. And finally, the people at the Manned Spacecraft Center... This operation...somewhat like the periscope of a submarine. All you see is the three [Apollo astronauts], but beneath the surface are thousands and thousands of others, and to all of those, I would like to say, 'Thank you very much.' Armstrong said, We would like to give special thanks to all those Americans who built the spacecraft; who did the construction, design, the tests, and put their hearts and all their abilities into those craft. To those people, we give a special thank you, and to all the other people who are listening and watching tonight, God bless you. Good night from Apollo 11.

In keeping with that history, we're taking a moment to thank the people who have helped with OASIS activities in the last year.

All the OASIS members, without whom there would be no Los Angeles chapter. Speakers for the OASIS Lecture Series—Dr. Robert Brodsky, Dr. James Woodward, Mike Weasner, Phil Turek, Dr. Mark Adler, Ian Swanson. Speakers at ISDC, arranged through OASIS—Dr. Robert Conger, Warren James, Dr. Martin Lo, Rex Ridenoure. Speakers at OASIS 25th Anniversary Dinner—Dr. Scott Pace, Dr. Richard van Allen, Terry Savage (OASIS co-founder). ISDC volunteers who helped serve as security, registration, setup and teardown. David Bliss, who videotaped at ISDC. Paula Delfosse, who transcribed the ISDC talks. All the people who came to celebrate the 25th anniversary, especially those who came in from out of town. Table volunteers for last year's Loscon. Volunteers who helped with the Downey Space Museum.

Jim Busby and Mark Hopkins, who arranged for OASIS members to attend the 30th anniversary of Apollo 17 event in December. George Osorio and Alex Diaz, of Boeing, for their invaluable assitance with the MER talk. Dr. James and Alice Wertz of Microcosm for their continuing support and use of their facilities for most of our monthly meetings. Craig Ward for all his work on the OASIS website and the various OASIS mailing lists. Dennis Whipple for video support.

All the contributors to Odyssey—Articles and columns by Craig Ward, Robert Gounley, Steve Bartlett, Tina Beychok, Diane Rhodes. Norm Cook and Robert Gounley for their work on the Space Calendar each month. Kris Cerone for work on the Odyssey through May. People who shared their thoughts on the loss of the Columbia space shuttle, and their memories of 25 years of OASIS. And finally, to the people at Kinko's, who've been so understanding as I’ve dropped off the Odyssey for duplication at the last minute.

Thank you,

Kat Tanaka, Odyssey editor
