Challenger's Legacy
Near the end of January, 2001, it will be exactly
fifteen years since seven astronauts were killed in the Challenger
accidents in one of the most visually shocking accidents of the space
age.
For people in my generation who were still young at
the time of the accident, it was a formative experience. It terrified
some and hardened the resolve of others. Perhaps no one's real opinions
were changed, but many were reinforced, as we were forced to cope with
the possible consequences of our beliefs.
In this issue, we are re-printing a copy of an
essay on the event, which was originally published on the tenth anniversary
of the disaster.
We also have the first installment of Bob Gounley's
series on spacecraft attitude control,
and some reflections by Steve Bartlett on
the meaning of his own efforts towards affordable space launch systems.
Legacy features of the on-line editions of the Odyssey prevent the menu system from finding editions prior to January 2001. These back issues are here. An alternate menu will allow readers to navigate between those editions.
